About the Artist

Alexej von Jawlensky was a Russian-born painter who became a central figure in German Expressionism during the early twentieth century. Closely associated with the Munich avant-garde and the influential group Der Blaue Reiter, Jawlensky sought to move beyond traditional portraiture by exploring color, form, and spiritual expression. His work reflects a deep engagement with the search for inner meaning, which resonated with many artists of his era.

Jawlensky’s later series, including his Mystical Heads, marked a turning point in his career as he focused on the human face as a symbol of universal consciousness. For more works by pioneering modernists, visit our famous artists posters collection.

The Artwork

Created in 1918, Mystical Head emerged during a period of personal and societal transformation, when Jawlensky turned to spiritual themes as a response to the uncertainties of the time. Rather than portraying a specific individual, this piece distills the face into an archetypal form, inviting viewers to contemplate the inner self rather than outward identity.

This approach reflects a broader early modernist movement, where artists used abstraction and repetition to seek harmony and meaning. As a fine art print, Mystical Head continues to evoke a sense of meditation and introspection, bridging the gap between historical context and contemporary appreciation.

Style & Characteristics

The composition features a frontal face constructed from bold, flattened shapes, with thick dark outlines defining the features in a balanced, symmetrical arrangement. The color palette contrasts warm oranges and reds with cool blues and greens, creating a gentle yet striking visual rhythm.

The overall effect is both graphic and serene, with the abstracted face inviting quiet reflection. This distinctive style, blending expressive color with simplified form, aligns with the spirit of early twentieth-century modernism. In Interior Design

Mystical Head lends itself beautifully to tranquil spaces such as bedrooms, meditation corners, or reading nooks, where its centered composition fosters a calm atmosphere. It also serves as a striking focal point in a living room gallery wall, pairing well with minimalist furnishings and natural textures.

To enhance its palette, incorporate beige or light wood accents and consider touches of red or blue for harmony. A simple mat and refined frame elevate the fine art print, and our frames collection offers options to suit modern or classic interiors.
